Last night, while sitting at dinner at La Veranda, I experienced a moment that I have only dreamt about. Sitting next to me at the dinner table was the leadership group – the Generals Club, the Executive Team at the Boys and Girls Club and Peter Dyga the CEO of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) East Coast Chapter. We were celebrating the creation of a new craft trainees program at ABC where 25 members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Broward County, ranging in age from 16 – 18, will travel to the ABC offices, five days a week for a four week session during their summer break. These young members of our community will gain 144 hours of educational credits from a Nationally Accredited apprenticeship program at ABC and will walk out of the program with an understanding of Construction Math, Plan Reading, Basic Construction Techniques, an OSHA 10 hour certification and will have spent time in the Electrical and HVAC labs at ABC.
The Boys and Girls Club will screen and select 25 kids that are interested in a career in construction, based upon their participation in the Construction Career Day that the kids have already been exposed to over the last 5 years. In turn what our industry will get from their completion of the program, are 25 new candidates that are ready to work and have shown a commitment to the growth of our industry.
As we all know, in the construction profession, many people do not give our industry the credit it deserves as being a fantastic career path for individuals with varied educational backgrounds. The fact that Ruth Triado, the VP of Education and Training at ABC and I went from our personal excitement in bringing the two organizations together to create an educational program to benefit both the Boys and Girls Club and our Industry last June – to a functioning program in less than a year’s time is a testament to the commitment of everyone involved and a dream come true. Most importantly, this program will give the construction community an opportunity to help 25 young members in our community realize their dreams and better their futures.
Please join us at ABC’s East Coast Chapter located at 3720 Coconut Creek Parkway, Suite J, in Coconut Creek, FL on March 21st at 5 PM for a cocktail reception to learn more about the summer program and see how you can be a part of the Generals Club.
